Allactaga elater ranges from the northern Caspian Lowland and Transcaucasia to the Altai Mountains in the east, and central Iran and Pakistan to the south (Map). This is the smallest species of the genus Allactaga. It inhabits semi-deserts and deserts with sandy, and loamy soils, and scattered low shrubs. It lives in burrows, plugging the entrances with soil during the day. A. elater feeds on herbs, seeds and insects. It hibernates in the northern parts of its range.
